  • CARB II compliant — meets California’s strict formaldehyde emission standards
  • AC-rated wear surface — aluminum oxide wear layer rated for residential and light commercial use
  • Float installation — click-lock system for fast, glue-free installation over most existing subfloors

Understanding Laminate Construction

Johnson Hardwood laminate flooring is built in layers, each serving a specific purpose:

Wear LayerMelamine resin with aluminum oxide — provides scratch, stain, and scuff resistance. The AC rating of this layer determines the floor’s durability classification.
Decorative LayerHigh-resolution photographic print of real wood grain — available in a wide range of species, tones, and textures for authentic visual appeal.
HDF CoreHigh Density Fiberboard — compressed wood fiber and resin core for dimensional stability, dent resistance, and a solid underfoot feel.
Pre-Attached UnderlaymentFoam backing layer included with all Johnson Hardwood laminate — improves comfort, reduces sound transfer, and simplifies installation.

AC Ratings — Choosing the Right Laminate

The AC rating system measures a laminate floor’s resistance to wear, scratching, impact, and staining. Johnson Hardwood laminate collections are available in ratings suited for a range of applications:

AC3 Moderate residential traffic — bedrooms, living rooms, low-traffic areas
AC4 General commercial use — offices, light-traffic retail, boutique environments
AC5 Heavy commercial use — high-traffic retail, hospitality, public spaces

For most residential installations, AC3 or AC4 provides the right balance of durability and value. For commercial projects or high-traffic residential environments, AC4 or AC5 is recommended. Ask your territory sales representative for specific AC ratings on individual collections.

Laminate vs Other Flooring Types

Laminate is the right choice when customers want the look of real wood with strong durability and a lower price point. Here is how it compares to other options in the Johnson Hardwood lineup:

vs Engineered Hardwood Laminate offers better scratch resistance and lower cost. Engineered hardwood has a real wood surface and can be refreshed. Choose laminate for budget-conscious buyers and high-traffic areas.
vs SPC Rigid Core SPC is 100% waterproof and better for wet areas. Laminate offers a wider range of visual styles and is better suited for dry residential environments.
vs WPC WPC has a softer feel and better waterproofing. Laminate provides more authentic wood visuals and stronger AC-rated surface protection for dry environments.
vs Solid Hardwood Laminate delivers comparable aesthetics at a fraction of the cost with far greater resistance to scratches, dents, and daily wear.

Installation and Care

Johnson Hardwood laminate flooring installs as a floating floor using a click-lock locking system — no glue required. The pre-attached underlayment eliminates an additional installation step and ensures consistent comfort and sound performance.

  • Subfloor requirements — clean, dry, flat subfloor within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Maximum moisture content 12% for wood subfloors.
  • Acclimation — acclimate in the installation room for a minimum of 48 hours at normal living conditions before installation
  • Daily maintenance — sweep or vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Damp mop with a hardwood floor cleaner — never use wet mops or steam cleaners
  • Moisture caution — laminate is moisture resistant but not waterproof. Not recommended for full bathroom installations or high-standing-water environments
