Engineered Hardwood
Engineered hardwood is real wood — just not solid wood all the way through. It is built with a top layer (the wear layer) of genuine hardwood veneer bonded over multiple layers of high-density fiberboard, plywood, or hardwood cross-plies. The result is a product that looks and feels like real hardwood because the surface actually is real hardwood, while the layered core adds dimensional stability that solid hardwood lacks.
One question dealers frequently encounter is whether engineered hardwood can be refinished. The honest answer is nuanced. Refinishing is more common with solid hardwood, where the entire plank thickness provides material to work with. For engineered hardwood, the ability to refinish depends on the wear layer thickness, the surface texture, and the refinishing method used. Smooth-surface products with thicker veneers offer more flexibility than wire-brushed or handscraped surfaces, where refinishing would remove the texture that defines the product’s character. Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring has a layered construction. The top is a clear protective wear layer — typically a melamine resin overlay infused with aluminum oxide — that provides the floor’s scratch and stain resistance. Below that is a high-resolution decorative paper layer with the wood-grain design. Underneath is a core of HDF (High Density Fiberboard), which is made from highly compressed wood fibers and resin — so while the visual layer is not real wood, the core does contain wood fiber material. Higher-end products use a denser HDF core or a water-resistant black core that incorporates marine-grade adhesives for improved moisture performance. The assembly is completed with a backing layer for added stability.
It is worth noting that some manufacturers and retailers use the term “real wood” loosely when describing laminate. This is misleading — the design layer is a photographic print, not a wood surface. The distinction matters when customers ask, and accurate product knowledge builds long-term trust.

Engineered hardwood is the right recommendation when the customer values authenticity and the natural look and feel of real wood. Specific scenarios where engineered hardwood wins:
- Homeowners who want real wood — customers who specifically ask for hardwood and are willing to invest in it
- High-end residential builds and renovations — when resale value and premium aesthetics are priorities
- Installations over radiant heat — engineered hardwood’s layered construction handles temperature changes better than solid hardwood; always confirm product specifications with the manufacturer before specifying
- Above-grade installations in controlled environments — engineered hardwood performs well where humidity is maintained within recommended ranges
When to Recommend Laminate
Laminate is the right recommendation when the customer wants the look of wood with strong durability performance and a lower price point:
- Budget-conscious buyers — laminate delivers strong visual impact at a significantly lower price point
- Households with kids, pets, or heavy foot traffic — higher AC-rated laminates offer excellent scratch and stain resistance
- Rental properties and investment units — lower upfront cost and good durability make laminate a practical choice for landlords
- Customers who prioritize durability over refinishing — if long-term maintenance and refinishing are not a priority, laminate’s tough wear layer becomes the stronger selling point
- Spaces with moderate moisture exposure — water-resistant core options handle incidental moisture better than standard engineered hardwood; for high-moisture areas, SPC or WPC remain the stronger recommendation

“Which one is better?” is the wrong question. The right question is: “What does this customer actually need?”
A retired couple renovating their forever home who value the look and feel of authentic wood deserves an honest conversation about engineered hardwood — its natural surface, its aesthetics, and the long-term care it requires.
A first-time homebuyer furnishing a starter home on a tight budget, with a dog and two kids, who plans to move in five years? A high AC-rated laminate is probably the better recommendation — and the most honest one for their situation.
The dealer who takes time to understand what the customer actually needs makes the right recommendation every time. That is what builds lasting client relationships and long-term referrals.
