What SPC and WPC Actually Are
Both SPC and WPC are forms of luxury vinyl flooring built around a rigid core — which is what makes them dimensionally stable and waterproof. The difference is in what that core is made of.
SPC — Stone Plastic Composite
SPC flooring has a core made from a blend of limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilizers. The result is an extremely dense, hard, and dimensionally stable product. It doesn’t compress underfoot and it barely moves with temperature or humidity changes. SPC is typically thinner and denser than WPC — usually 4mm to 6mm total thickness.
WPC — Wood Plastic Composite
WPC flooring uses a foamed core made from a blend of wood pulp and plastic composites. The foamed structure creates a slightly softer, warmer feel underfoot and provides better sound absorption than SPC. WPC is typically thicker than SPC — usually 6mm to 8mm or more — and feels closer to real hardwood when you walk on it.

SPC is the right choice when waterproofing and stability are the primary concerns:
- Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and mudrooms — anywhere water exposure is high
- Basements and below-grade installations
- Commercial spaces, retail environments, and high-traffic areas
- Regions with extreme humidity or temperature swings — including Texas, Florida, and the Gulf Coast
- Installations over radiant heat systems where dimensional stability is critical
- Projects with tight budgets where waterproof performance is non-negotiable

When to Recommend WPC
WPC is the right choice when comfort and aesthetics are as important as waterproof performance:

- Multi-family housing, condos, and apartments where sound absorption between floors is important
- Projects where the customer wants the warmth and feel of real hardwood with waterproof protection
- Installations over existing hard subfloors where the WPC’s thickness helps absorb minor imperfections
- Higher-end residential builds where budget allows for a premium product
The Question Dealers Get Wrong
The most common mistake when recommending between SPC and WPC is treating it as purely a price decision. It isn’t. A customer in a Houston townhome with three kids and a dog doesn’t need the hardest floor money can buy — they need a floor that feels good to live on and handles spills without drama. That’s WPC.
